Plenty of radiators mix metals — a copper core with brass tanks, or an aluminum core with steel mounts. Those combinations take a different repair approach, and guessing wrong ruins the part.

When a core is too far gone to patch, a recore keeps your original tanks and mounting hardware and puts a fresh core between them. For older and hard-to-find radiators that is often the only way to get the vehicle back on the road.

It is also a chance to upgrade: adding rows gives you more cooling capacity than the factory unit had — useful on the I-15 grade in August.
